Qewy firmed noticeably in Geelong Cup betting markets in the hours leading up to jump, and his chances of justifying the trend no harm when jumping well and immediately taking up the pace.

Leading Grey Lion, Lucques and Kinema past the post the first line, the Street Cry gelding ensured that plenty of tempo would be injected into the Geelong Cup 2016 from the outset.

Stringing the field out along the fence, Qewy led the field into the final straight at Geelong and was allowed plenty of time to steady before jockey Kerrin McEvoy asked for an extra effort and the horse responded favourably; sustaining a strong enough sprint to beat Grey Lion and fast-finishing stablemate Oceanographer.

Stable representative for trainer Charlie Appleby, James Ferguson was thrilled with Qewy’s performance to win the Geelong Cup and confirmed that both horses will now target the Melbourne Cup.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” Ferguson said.

“We told Kerrin just go, he stays all day and is dropping back in trip, and he’s given him a beautiful ride.

“It’s just brilliant for the whole team. For Charlie at home; we came over to get a job done and have winners and thank god that’s what we’ve done.

“We’ll see what happens, but if he goes up enough and if he gets in, I’m pretty sure he’d run (in the Melbourne Cup).”

McEvoy’s ride was undoubtedly the difference in Qewy winning the Geelong Cup 2016 and the hoop was thrilled to deliver old friend Charlie Appleby another likely Melbourne Cup runner.

“James and the team just said get him mobile, warmed up and into the race,” McEvoy said.

“We were able to just get out into a rhythm and make it a test. At the top of the hill I just sort of asked him to wheel down and away he went.

“Full credit to the horse – he lacks a quick change of gears but he’s very genuine and honest, and just keeps picking up so that’s all you can ask.”

In taking out the 2016 Geelong Cup, Qewy has now posted a commendable three wins and five minors through only seventeen competitive starts.
