Jumping from the gates well, jockey James McDonald allowed Almoonqith to stride forward but settled off the pace of early leader Don Doremo, Kapour and Sonntag past the post the first time and rounding onto the back straight.

Kapour took up the lead in the back straight and ensured the 2015 Geelong Cup would be contested at a reasonable tempo; stringing the field out along the fence.

Rounding onto the final straight wide and with plenty to do, Almoonqith immediately responded when asked for an extra effort; producing a monumental sprint to take the lead and hit the line ahead of Dandino; Manndawi boxing on for third.

Co-trainer David Hayes was on hand for Almoonqith’s impressive performance for success in the Geelong Cup and confirmed the 2015 Melbourne Cup will figure as his major target should he gain a berth in the race.

“He’s always threatened that he’s very good, I’ve always said he’s got the form of my Caulfield Cup winner Tawqeet,” Hayes said.

“We decided to ride him a bit closer today because he’s fit, he got the dream ride and it was just a fantastic ride.

“He looked like a Melbourne Cup horse in the run. He cruised up and I thought he might have gone a little bit early but he knew what he was doing and won really convincingly.

“I would say if he gets into the field, he’ll go straight in. This has been a good guide in recent years and he’s hit form at the right time.”

James McDonald delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Almoonqith for success in the 2015 Geelong Cup and was impressed with the feel offered up by talented stayer in the win.

“I had the horse underneath me – wherever I went he just towed me into it,” McDonald said.

“He travelled really well but what impressed me the most was his turn of foot. When I let him go he went very quick and sustained it right to the line, which was very impressive.

“Obviously with his Metropolitan form it was going to be pretty strong coming here.”

McDonald echoed Hayes’ sentiments on the horse being a genuine Melbourne Cup contender on the first Tuesday of November.

“There’s no question about it – he’ll travel very well,” McDonald said.

“You’d love him to relax a length further back and he’ll give them a shake.”
