Dandino Ready for 2015 Geelong Cup

October 20th, 2015

Darren Weir has been thrilled with the continually building condition of veteran stayer Dandino this season, and is confident the horse is ready for a return to the winner’s circle in Wednesday’s featured 2015 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m).

Dandino more than announced himself to the Australian racing community through a standout 2013 Spring Carnival preparation; running a close second to Fawkner in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) before placing second in the Melbourne Cup.

Confirming a run in the Melbourne Cup remains the ultimate target for the talented gelding this season, Weir is confident a return to 2400m will play directly into the strengths of his runner on Wednesday and confirmed he will sport blinkers in the 2015 Geelong Cup.

“He is looking like he wants the 2400m now and I’m happy with his progress in what has been a smooth and good preparation,” Weir told the Herald Sun.

“I’ve added the blinkers and there will be no excuses, especially as he has a perfect gate (8).

“He’d need to win to convince me to go into the Melbourne Cup and he’s probably need a half-kilo penalty to get him into the field.”

Posting an impressive eight wins and eleven minors through 35 career starts so far, Dandino began his racing career under the guidance of James Given in 2009; passing through the stables of James Fanshawe and Marco Botti on his way to Weir’s care at the conclusion of his 2014 campaign.

Failing to beat a single runner home in the talent-rich Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) upon returning to racing this time on August 29th, Dandino has clearly relished a continued step-up in distance through each of his four starts leading into the 2015 Geelong Cup.

Running eleventh in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), the Dansili gelding ran on for a credible eighth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) before attacking the line for fourth in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) last time out on October 4th.

Confirmed to be partnered by notable hoop Ben Melham, Dandino currently leads 2015 Geelong Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at a quote of $3.30 for success.
