Jumping from the gates well, Caravan Rolls on was settled in prime position within the pack passing the post the first time, allowing early leaders Ominous, Marksmanship and Zanbagh to set a fair pace rounding the first bend onto the back straight.

Remaining in similar position over the back straight, Williams found a clear line along the fence rounding the Hernando entire onto the final straight, cutting inside all of his competitors to find the fore of the pack and sustaining a strong enough sprint to withstand a late charge from Marksmanship; Like A Carousel running on for third.

Trainer Danny O’Brien was understandably pleased with Caravan Rolls On’s performance in the 2014 Geelong Cup and confirmed a hopeful berth in the featured Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November figures as the major prize of success.

“He’s a genuine two miler; we had to keep him very fresh today for the 2400 – he was third-up, three and a half weeks between runs so we had to keep the spring in his legs to be able to win at the mile and a half,” O’Brien said following the Geelong Cup.

“He’ll improve three or four lengths of what he showed today.

“Very fortunate to have had him; we’ve had him the better part of a year now so it’s be a long plan to hopefully get him to the Melbourne Cup and today was a big part of it and fortunately he got the job done.”

Williams delivered a polished performance aboard Caravan Rolls On in the 2014 Geelong Cup and is confident the form displayed this afternoon will translate into a competitive performance in the Melbourne Cup, should he secure a berth.

“I think it’s important that if something doesn’t work out you know what the horse can do and can’t do,” Williams said immediately after dismounting.

“The gear change, the way he came into the yard today, the way he stood in the gates; he was a race horse today and you saw him really outstay them late.

“They tell me that he’s a horse that really likes firm ground and I was really mindful of that today and he towed me through the whole part; we got a little bit neat in the entrance to the straight and he just pulled his way straight through there.

“The way the race is shaping up he runs two miles, he’s in great form, this is a great lead-up race.”
