Edwards Thrilled with Sertorius Ahead of 2014 Geelong Cup

Returning to racing in typically competitive form this year, trainer Jamie Edwards is confident classy local Sertorius is a leading chance of success in Wednesday’s featured Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m); figuring as the veteran’s final point of call ahead of the Melbourne Cup.

Securing a commendable total of nine wins and a further 13 minor places over his 34 start racing career to date, Sertorius is yet to register peak condition over three starts this time in; following up a promising sixth in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up with mid-pack finishes in both the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) most recently.

Pleased with the work produced by the Galileo gelding over the last fortnight, Edwards told AAP he is thrilled to be saddling a local hope in the 2014 Geelong Cup and is confident the racing conditions will play directly into the seven-year-old’s strengths on Wednesday.

“It’s just good for Geelong to have a local horse in the Cup and a horse that’s going to be competitive,” Edwards said.

“He’s in good condition, he’s obviously on a Melbourne Cup preparation this time in so this is his main lead-up into that.

“Fourth-up over a mile-and-a-half is exactely where we wanted to have him and that’s where we are.

“He’s been racing against the absolute top shelf horses, certainly through the autumn and the spring.

“It’s a step down but he’s giving everything at least three or four kilos in weight, so he’s going to have to carry top weight and come from a wide barrier to win, but 2400m seems to be his go, so there’s plenty of ticks.”

Running a close second to Moment Of Change in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) first-up this year, Sertorius continued to impress over an autumn preparation which also included a hard-fought fourth in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) and third place finishes in both the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) most notably.

Allocated barrier 11, Sertorius is currently available at generous odds of $6 for success in Geelong Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
