2014 Geelong Cup Underlined for Gatewood

October 3rd, 2014

Charging home to secure victory in the 2012 edition of the Group 3 feature, OTI Racing director Simon O’Donnell has confirmed classy gelding Gatewood will contest the 2014 Geelong Cup (2400m) on October 22nd.

An impressive performer in his native Europe leading up to his 2012/13 Australian campaign, Gatewood was unable to return to the winner’s circle under the care of Chris Waller after his comfortable one length victory in the Geelong Cup, but has returned to exceptional condition upon arriving back in Britain; failing to finish outside the places in ten starts, including three exceptional victories.

Understandably thrilled with the Galileo entire’s recent run of form, O’Donnell told The Bloodstock Network Gatewood did not enjoy his time in Australian last time, but is hopeful of repeating his impressive Geelong Cup efforts this year.

“He didn’t like Australia,” O’Donnell said.

“He ran 10 and 15 lengths below his standard and what he kept telling us was what he didn’t like it here.

“We sent him back home and he found his form again. He came of a European campaign to win a Geelong Cup and hopefully he can do it again.”

Hoping stable mates Renew and Van Percy will gain acceptance into the 2014 Melbourne Cup, O’Donnell said OTI Racing will also use the Geelong Cup as a stepping stone for the classy pair, if need be.

Securing an impressive record of eight wins and ten minor places from his 25 competitive starts so far, Gatewood has arguably reached career best form in 2014; finishing second in the Conditions Stakes (2414m) first-up before claiming back-to-back victories in the Listed Buckhounds Stakes (2414m) and Listed Tapster Stakes (2414m).

Unlucky to finish second in the Listed Fred Archer Stakes (2414m) on June 28th, the stallion out of Felicity returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Prix De Reux (2500m) on August 10th; finishing second to Cocktail Queen in the Group 2 Grand Prix De Deauville Lucien Barriere (2500m) last time out on August 31st.
