October 21st, 2013

This Wednesday, October 23, a field of 10 hopefuls will square off at Geelong Racecourse in the Geelong Cup 2013.

A lead-up race for outside chances for the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November, the $300,000 Group 1 Geelong Cup (2400m) is set to run as Race 7 at 4:00pm.

After 26 horses were originally nominated for the handicap clash, less than half of that accepted.

Six of the 10 horses in the Geelong Cup field meanwhile are still among the 73 first acceptors for the Melbourne Cup including European raider Forgotten Voice.

Drawn in barrier six with last year’s Melbourne Cup winning hoop Brett Prebble to ride, the Danehill Dancer nine-year-old races for the first time since winning the Group 3 Glorious Stakes (2414m) at Goodwood on August 2.

A hurdle winner back in England, the veteran is currently 38th on the Melbourne Cup order of entry and pays $61 to not only make the capacity 24-starter Melbourne Cup field but to also score an upset result in the world’s richest handicap race.

They will be making their Australian race debut too after just missing out on a start in the Caulfield Cup as the first emergency last Saturday.

The shortest priced of the six Melbourne Cup-bound Geelong Cup acceptors in futures Melbourne Cup betting meanwhile is Peter Moody’s Shirocco six-year-old Ibicenco ($51).

Ibicenco was last seen running a below par 12th to Seville in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick, Moody hoping they can return to form when racing in Melbourne again this week and gain a Melbourne Cup run currently sitting 40th on the ballot.

The other Melbourne Cup entered hopes in the Geelong Cup field and their Melbourne Cup ballot position are then the Robert Hickmott-trained Tanby (30th), last year’s Geelong Cup third placed Brigantin (37th), the Hawkes-trained Polish Knight (46th) and Ciaron Maher’s Moudre who is yet to pass the first ballot clause.

Rounding out the Geelong Cup field are then last start The Bart Cummings fourth placed Crafty Cruiser, Craig Williams’ mount Verdant, and the David Hayes-trained stablemates Goldini and Warwarwick.

Over the years the Geelong Cup result has had a bearing on the Melbourne Cup finishing order with recent Geelong Cup winners to run top three in the famous Flemington feature being Bauer (2008, Melbourne Cup 2nd to Viewed) and Irish raider Media Puzzle who completed the double back in 2002.

This year’s official Geelong Cup field, barriers and weights are detailed below.
