Geelong Cup Winner Gatewood Out Of 2012 Melbourne Cup Field

November 3rd, 2012

Geelong Cup winner Gatewood will not make the final field for the 2012 Melbourne Cup next Tuesday after failing to win the Lexus Stakes 2012 today.

Gatewood was only awarded a one kilogram penalty for his win in the 2012 Geelong Cup and was forced to rely on victory in the Lexus Stakes in order to claim automatic entry into the race.

However, he was unable to win the race at Flemington Racecourse today, and will now miss out on a run in the $6 million Melbourne Cup.

Gatewood has won five of his 10 race starts and has earned close to $300,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

The John Gosden-trained entire finished sixth of 13 in today’s $250,000 Lexus Stakes, which was won by Kelinni.

Kelinni will now go to the 2012 Melbourne Cup after claiming the automatic entry into the race.

The Refuse To Bend gelding has won eight of his 18 race starts and has earned more than $510,000 in prize money during his career.

Prior to today’s win, Kelinni finished second behind Glencadam Gold in the Group 1 The Metropolitan at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

The four-year-old was 38th on the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup prior to today’s Lexus Stakes win.
