2012 Melbourne Cup Start No Certainty For Gatewood

October 31st, 2012

Gatewood is not assured of a start in the $6 million Melbourne Cup next Tuesday November 6, 2012, despite his last start Geelong Cup win.

The four-year-old was only awarded a one kilogram penalty for his 2012 Geelong Cup win, leaving him 33rd on the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup.

Gatewood has won five of his nine race starts and has earned closed to $300,000 in prize money.

The Galileo entire will become the first international horse to run three times prior to a possible Melbourne Cup 2012 run.

Gatewood will now be forced to run in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday November 3, 2012, in the attempt to gain automatic entry into the cup.

However, part-owner Terry Henderson maintained that even a win in the 2012 Lexus Stakes would not guarantee he would run in the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

“If he wins, he automatically qualifies for a Cup start, but that doesn’t mean he will automatically run,” Henderson said.

“The Lexus will be his third race in five weeks, which is most unusual for a European galloper.

“Realistically we have three or four hours (after the Lexus) to be conclusively convinced that running in the Cup would be the best thing for the horse.”

The Geelong Cup has always been a great form guide for the Melbourne Cup, with the winners of the last two year’s events going on to win the Cup next start.
