Bart Cummings’ Illo To Run In Geelong Cup 2011 – Race Preview

October 4th, 2011

The Geelong Cup 2011 will take place at Geelong Racecourse in Victoria on Wednesday October 19, 2011.

The winner of the Group 3 Geelong Cup will be exempt from the 2011 Melbourne Cup ballot and will gain automatic entry into the field.

The Geelong Cup 2011 is worth $200,000 in prize money and will be run over a distance of 2,400 metres.

Run under handicap conditions, the 2011 Geelong Cup was won last year by Americain, who then went on to win the $6 million Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November.

This year trainer Bart Cummings will run his German stayer Illo in the 2011 Geelong Cup in the hope of gaining a Melbourne Cup run.

“He’s a bit on the light side. He weighs less than 450 kilos and all he wants to do is have a good feed,” Cummings said.

“He’ll start to do a bit more work this week. The Geelong Cup is his go. Give him a bit more time out of quarantine.

“That will be better.”

Also expected to compete in the 2011 Geelong Cup are Anthony Freedman’s Lucas Cranach, French galloper Dunaden and English horse Bauer.

Geelong Racing Club chief executive Paul Carroll said the Geelong Cup was often seen as a better option than the Caulfield Cup as a Melbourne Cup lead-up race.

“A lot of trainers who have the Melbourne Cup as their goal see the Geelong Cup as a softer race compared to the high pressure Caulfield Cup,” he said.
